Since three years I have observed in winter, a Mandarin drake near the Neubrandenburg Tollense. But I never saw a female at his side. This winter I was looking for him so far in vain. I thought that he would eventually come to harm. But then I heard the other day from a friend that he had re-emerged in his district. The next day, I was immediately on the spot and was able to shoot some pictures of him.
On Friday I was there again. To my surprise, was "my" drake now ladies up in terms of a mallard. Peacefully they stood together on the embankment. From an ornithologist, whom I met there, I learned that his lady jealously guarded and defended it against advances of drake mallards.
It took too long and I could not see with your own eyes, as he in the water around his Holde jealous swam circles. It was simply wonderful.
